Pricing

There is a lot of information from all sorts of sources as to how much your accountant should be charging you. This will vary from software adverts saying they can do it all for you, trade organisations giving an indicative figure and your friends boasting as to how little they are paying their accountant. This final source of info is always risky for one main reason – they will knock at least 20% off it so they feel they are getting the best possible deal (because they are better at business than you – sound familiar?) and because nobody wants to admit that they are not getting the best possible deal.

So how much should you pay for an accountant?

The answer as with most things to do with accounts, tax and life – is it depends?

It depends on sector, for example:

  • Construction is more technical than most due to retentions, CIS and particularly difficult VAT rules.

  • Wine importers – they need to deal with duty, rules of importing high value goods and VAT when products move into and out of bond. warehouses.

  • Agriculture – many sales from one product - often each with different VAT rates, rules for obtaining grants, rules and restrictions on the use of "gang" labour especially for employing overseas staff for picking fruit and vegetables

It also depends on what services you need and what services you really need – these are often not the same thing!

For sure if you are an established business doing the same (more or less) every year, you have been doing it for many years, you have a complete system – then perhaps compliance is all you need. However if your business is new, or you have had to change what you are doing because of COVID, Brexit, or just general uncertainty then what you need is a monthly or quarterly meeting where we discuss what has happened what you want to happen and how we go from one to the other.

At Inglis Chartered Accountants we have a system that takes all these factors into account and we can build up a pricing model that is right for both you and your business. This system is designed to help you get to where you want to be – no more and no less. We strongly believe in a win win relationship. If we win and you lose or you win and we lose then ultimately that relationship is doomed for failure.

A win for us and a win for you is the only possible means of a having a meaningful true long term relationship.
